getting back to the basics

By

I didn’t grow up in church. I spent most Sunday mornings watching cartoons and eating cereal on the couch with my brother. There weren’t morning bible studies or prayers over meals happening in my house. So when I decided to follow Jesus as a high schooler – it was a lonely pursuit. I didn’t come home to high fives or tears of joy, I came home to a couple halfhearted “well that’s nice” remarks and puzzled looks.

I didn’t mind that though. I knew what I believed and I knew one day they would get it too. But there’s something to be said about starting something from scratch. It requires some extra effort. I didn’t have someone to bounce questions off of at first so a lot of my faith journey started with whatever the heck I could remember from our Wednesday night youth group and whole lot of Bible Roulette. Ever heard of it? It’s when you plop down your Bible and read whatever page it lands on. The problem with that is you pick up a whole lot of verses – with a whole lack of context. But that is where I started. And starting is far better than not trying.

But can we be honest for a second? I couldn’t really understand why everyone loved the Bible so much. I would flip through the pages and read bits and pieces of things that sounded nice – but I still had a lot of questions. Why did people trust a book that hasn’t been updated in hundreds of years? They say it is the word of God but it was written by people – are we sure the people got it right? Is this just a history book? Are there stories in it that are not boring? What can I say, I am an inquisitive girl. I have spent my life pursuing God with all that I have – questions included. And what I love most about God is that He does not run from questions, He answers questions. To some of my questions I found answers that were undeniably true, and others I found answers that led to more questions. The fun part about following God is that we can spend all of our days dedicated to knowing Him and yet have so much more to still learn.

So I write this to say that if you have ever pondered the question of if the Bible is actually interesting?? You’re in a safe place. But can I tell you something? The Bible is one of the most interesting pieces of literature the world has ever seen. It has withstood the test of time. It speaks of things directly to the people at the time and yet speaks to us today just as loudly. There is love, loss, action, betrayal, underdog stories, really toxic relationships (sorry Samson), heart-wrenchingly sad moments, injustice that makes you so mad you want to yell, and stories of forgiveness that give you hope on a hard day. Come on, you’re a little interested right?

So if you have ever plopped open your Bible and couldn’t quite figure out what was happening, if you’ve given up on reading because you got distracted by Netflix and voted that your show was a lot cooler than Leviticus, allow me the chance to take you on a journey!

The reality is this, if you would take just a few minutes a day to read the Word of God I believe it would change your life. It would remind you to dream, instill a sense of peace in the chaos, give you confidence to face your giants, and remind you that the God of creation loved you enough that He desires to talk with you and to you. Most often, we hear the voice of God through His Word. The Bible holds a lot more power open in your hands than closed collecting dust on your shelf. And my hope is that through this series you will discover the joy (no pun intended) found within it’s pages. So buckle up, we’re taking a journey through what I deem are some of the most epic, non boring, stories in scripture. Because if you don’t know where to start, why not start with the good stuff? (Granted, it’s all good stuff) My prayer is this, that together we may be reminded of the power of God’s Word and that you fall more and more in love with Him & with scripture.

So grab your Bibles and your caffeine of preference and get ready to see scripture come alive!

First post will roll out on friday this week 🙂
