“Here comes that dreamer!”(Genesis 37:19) This is what they chanted as they conspired to get rid of Joseph. His brothers saw him walking towards them in the distance and thought back to all he had shared with them. To be fair, Joseph was the little brother. The same little brother who told them multiple dreams in which they would be the ones bowing down to him one day. I guess it also didn’t super help that he was also the golden child – you know, every family has one. He was his father’s favorite. Favor that seemed unfair to his brothers. Dressed in a special robe given to him from his father, Joseph made his way to check on his brothers. Little did he know, this would be the beginning of a long, hard journey for him. The Dreamer found himself at the bottom of a pit. Luckily for him, his brother’ thought murder was a little too extreme – guess family issues have been around for a long time. (And all the people with crazy families said amen)
Why do I share this? Joseph had a big dream. That dream told to him by God. He had a vision of what was to come but what he did not account for was how that dream would play out. The dream came at a cost. He was separated from his family, sold into slavery, thrown into prison because his bosses wife did NOT take rejection well and lied about him, was forgotten about after doing a solid for another prisoner who was freed, THEN after interpreting a dream for Potiphar was able to step into a position of power. Talk about a rollercoaster.
But whether in the pit, the prison, or the palace – God’s favor never left Joseph. In fact, he was given favor in all that he did. And guess what – the dream that he was given did come true! The dream was in no way easy – it came at a cost. But God sized dreams tend to do that.
Here’s the deal, I fear we often talk ourselves out of dreams. Let’s be honest, by we, I mean me too. Sometimes the dream seems too far fetched, too scary, too difficult, too … insert your own excuse here. We get struck by the plague of the What If’s. What if I fail? What if they laugh at me? What if people don’t like it? What if I am not the best choice? What if it doesn’t turn out how I planned? But for a minute, could I offer you a respite for your panic and trade you for some hope?
What if you learn something new about you in the process? What if it grows your dependence on God? What if someone’s freedom is on the other side of your dream? What if someone has been waiting for someone like you to come along? What if it turns out better than you could have ever hoped, dreamed, or prayed for?
What would the world look like if we all boldly chased after the dreams that God has given us? What would our lives look like if we trusted that the author of the World is the author of our stories? Meaning, He who gives the dreams is worthy enough to be trusted.
The truth is, I have a dream – that dream is to help make the God who is so real to me, real to you. So welcome to the inner workings of my dream. My dream is to help make the Bible make sense, help encourage you in your walk, help be the sister you never asked for (but secretly kind of love), and to help be your cheerleader on the hard days.
So welcome to Here Comes That Dreamer – let’s grow together.
